Makassar, 4 April 2019 – Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) Sinar Mas again participated in the IndoGreen Forestry & Expo 2019 organized by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia. In this 11th iteration, APP Sinar Mas promulgated the success of sustainable land management through the Desa Makmur Peduli Api (DMPA) program, with the aim of motivating all stakeholders in the forestry sector.
"APP Sinar Mas has implemented the DMPA program since 2015. As of December 2018, the program has had a positive impact for 16.807 farming families from 284 villages that are spread across Riau, Jambi, South Sumatra, East Kalimantan and West Kalimantan," said APP Sinar Mas Director of Social and Security Agung Wiyono, who was a speaker at IndoGreen Forestry & Expo 2019.
In implementing the DMPA program, APP Sinar Mas works together with various parties such as the Organic Gagego Community (3GO). The 3GO Community has knowledge and experience in the use of organic materials in agriculture, from land management, use of fertilizers, to organic or plant-based pesticides.
DMPA's collaboration with the 3GO Community was carried out in the Air Sugihan District, Ogan Komering Ilir, South Sumatra. Here, the 3GO Community mentors farmers from 6 villages around the concession area of PT Bumi Andalas Permai, an APP Sinar Mas supplier.
The DMPA program in Air Sugihan District has succeeded in changing the farmers’ mindsets in how they manage their land in a more sustainable manner. Previously, farmers in Air Sugihan District used to clear land by burning. Now, land clearing is achieved through manual cutting. Rice and maize straw, which were previously used to burn land, are now used as compost materials.
Additionally, this DMPA program with the 3GO Community has also succeeded in reducing chemical use by up to 50%, which has had a positive impact on reducing production costs, improving land quality, and producing better quality corn and rice.
"We are very pleased that the DMPA program has been welcomed by the farmers in Air Sugihan District. We hope that more farmers can participate in the DMPA program and enjoy the benefits," Agung said.
The DMPA program implemented by APP Sinar Mas is in line with the objectives of the IndoGreen Forestry & Expo 2019, which is to improve the quality and the contribution of the forestry sector. This is why APP Sinar Mas has actively participated in the annual event since the beginning.
"We are aware that improving the quality of the forestry sector must begin by mentoring the farmers first. This isn’t the sole duty of the government, but also that of all elements of the society, including private companies like us," concluded Agung.
