DMPA Farmer Meets with Jokowi at 2017 Trade Expo Indonesia

Tangerang, October 11, 2017– The 2017 Trade Expo Indonesia (TEI) filled out as a special occasion for Suryono, the outstanding local farmer, who has joined the Integrated Forestry & Farming System (IFFS) program of APP Sinarmas. He met with the President Joko Widodo directly and had warm talk after president kicked off the event’s opening on Oct. 11.

President Joko Widodo, along with Economic Minister Darmin Nasution and Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita launched the 32nd edition of the largest annual trade fair of Indonesian goods and services at the BSD’s Indonesia Convention Exhibition, or ICE- kicking off on last Wednesday and been set to run through Oct. 15.

Being introduced by Sinar Mas Managing Director, G. Sulistyanto, to President Jokowi, Suryono was extremely exultant and felt honored. "It is unbelievable. I have never imagined this before," he said. The President has just given an appreciation to him as one of the 72 inspirational figures who have brought in contributions to advance the nation in the social activist category.

Suryono was appointed to be one of the representatives for newly established presidential working unit for the implementation of Pancasila as the state ideology (UKP-PIP). During the sidelines of the TEI event, Jokowi then went on running gag and simply replied, “I have seen this, and I have often read about him in newspapers.”

Previously, Suryono was also appointed as a speaker at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP 22) in Morocco. This former palm oil farmer spoke about his success stories of horticultural farming activities which have kept on contributing to the efforts on climate change mitigation.

Suryono's inspirational story stemmed from determination to switch career paths to agricultural farming. In 2013, Suryono started running on better farming techniques under IFFS programme. He learnt which crops grew best in particular seasons, how to pick up the modern irrigation techniques and even market prices studies. As a result, he now has quadrupled his monthly income and encouraged fellow farmers following his footsteps in Sukajaya Village, Kampung Pinang Sebatang Barat, Riau Province.

Asides from gaining better profits, Suryono along with local farmers believed that this programme has become their environmental champions in managing local forest areas, whereby, in line with national efforts in reducing the impact of climate change. He envisioned the conversion from plantation to agricultural activities could enhance not only quality and quantity of agricultural productions, but also yet to welcome farmers facing challenges in thus sector.
