APP Wins Special Commendation at Sustainability Reporting Awards 2016

Jakarta, 14 December 2016 -- For the fourth time, Asia Pulp & Paper Group (APP) has picked up an award at the 2016 Sustainability Reporting Awards (SRA). This year, APP has been awarded the “Special Commendation for Best Practice” for its Forest Conservation Policy, which the company has implemented since 2013. The decision to present APP with this special award was made by a panel of judges led by the former Indonesian Minister of Environment, Sarwono Kusumaatmadja.

The Forest Conservation Policy is APP's commitment to refrain from using wood fibers from natural forests, protect peat land areas, empower local communities, and guarantee that all of their suppliers abide by the same commitment.

Now in its twelfth year, the Sustainability Reporting Awards are given in recognition of the companies that communicate their sustainability initiatives through reporting mechanisms such as sustainability reports or corporate websites. Sustainability reports are an important tool through which organizations can communicate its performance in achieving its environmental, social and governance objectives, with the overall aim of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The theme of this year's Sustainability Reporting Awards are "Towards Greater Transparency and Investment".

Since 2005, APP, along with other industry leaders, has prepared Sustainability Reports in line with the standards of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). This year APP applied the G4 version of the GRI, which was the latest version of the GRI available at the time of compiling the 2015 report. To ensure credibility and accuracy, APP's sustainability report was fact-checked and verified by an independent third party prior to its release.
"As one of the largest pulp and paper companies in the world, APP is aware of its role in the conservation of Indonesian forests -- not just in the areas which APP and its suppliers operate in, but also the wider landscape. Through the sustainability reports we prepare each year, APP shares its progress in implementing the FCP commitments with various stakeholders. We share this information in a transparent manner in the hope that our initiatives on the field will encourage other parties to collaborate in support of the Indonesian government’s efforts to protect forests,” said APP Sustainability Manager, Librian Angraeni.

In 2015, APP made important progress in the delivery of their Sustainability Roadmap – Vision 2020, as well as the FCP, in regard to advancing a multi-stakeholder approach to restoration. Most notably, 2015 saw the introduction of the Integrated Forest and Farming System Program; the establishment of the Belantara Foundation as a financing platform for forest protection and restoration initiatives in landscapes where APP and its suppliers operate; and progress in the best practice peat land management program, wherein APP has built over 5,000 canal perimeters in all supplier concessions to help raise water levels along peat land areas bordering with natural forests. These achievements were covered in the 2015 Sustainability report.

Previously, in the 2015 Sustainability Reporting Awards, APP won in the category of “Best Disclosure on Sustainability Management” for its 2014 sustainability report.

The Sustainability Reporting Awards were initiated by the National Center for Sustainability Reporting, an independent organization that works to develop sustainability reporting, knowledge and practice of sustainability management orientated by business ethics, social and environmental responsibility for the sustainable development of Indonesia.
