APP: Joint commitment to prevent and suppress fires

Ogan Komering Ilir, March 24, 2016 – Asia Pulp & Paper Group (APP) held a fire preparedness exhibition today on its industrial grounds to show its readiness in facing this year’s dry season. The exhibition was witnessed by the Minister of Home Affairs, Tjahjo Kumolo; Commander of the Indonesian Armed Forces, General Gatot Nurmantyo; Chief of the Indonesian National Police, General Badrodin Haiti; Governor of South Sumatera, Alex Noerdin; and also the Head of the National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB), Willem Rampangilei. “The fire preparedness exhibition shows our commitment towards building synergies across the private sector, central government, provincial governments and BNPB to prevent and suppress land and forest fires,” said APP Director, Suhendra Wiriadinata.

This year APP is investing USD 20 million on fire prevention and suppression efforts, including Incident Command System (ICS) training to over 400 APP staff members and supplier employees under the guidance of fire management experts from Canada’s TREK Wildland Services and South Africa’s Working on Fire. The ICS teams and newly acquired aircraft are grouped as mobile fire management teams which can be rapidly deployed to high fire risk locations which are identified based on data from national bi-weekly fire risk reviews. The company has also invested in advanced equipment to support its firefighting efforts. The frontline defense is fortified with two fire detection drones with thermal imaging cameras capable of near real-time data delivery, as well as a fleet of water-bombing helicopters, including the recent addition of the Super Puma Eurocopter with a 4.5 ton water capacity.

"We are strengthening every aspect of our fire prevention and suppression effort, from manpower, firefighting equipment, additional water-bombing helicopters, system improvements, to using innovative geothermal technology for early detection of fire spots," said Wiriadinata. "Today we are demonstrating our tactical effort to suppress fires with one of our water bombing helicopters, a giant water tank that can hold up to 15,000 liters, and other fire-fighting tanks".

To increase the role of the local community around our operations, APP signed a Memorandum of Understanding with seven villages as a part of its agroforestry program. Announced earlier last year at the COP21 event in December, the program set a target of commitment amounting to USD 10 million over a five year period to improve economic development in 500 villages around the concession area of our suppliers.

Additionally, APP’s partnership with BNPB and the South Sumatra Provincial Government has led to a joint commitment to support all manner of forest fire prevention and suppression activities.

“The efforts of APP are merely part of a greater joint effort to prevent and suppress forest and land fires this year. Without the support and collaboration of all stakeholders, our fire prevention efforts would simply not achieve the optimum results,” said Wiriadinata.

About APP-Indonesia

Asia Pulp & Paper Group (APP) is a trade name for a group of pulp and paper manufacturing companies. APP is responsible for delivering quality products to meet the growing global demand for tissue, packaging and paper. On any given day, our products find their way into the hands of consumers in various branded forms all over the world.

Started in 1972 with Tjiwi Kimia producing caustic soda, now we run nine mills located in Java and Sumatra islands with an annual combined pulp, paper, packaging product and converting capacity of over 9 million tons. Today, APP markets its products in more than 120 countries across six continents.

Over the years, we have expanded our operations significantly through the acquisition and expansion of several of our pulp and paper mills. It’s our commitment to customer satisfaction that enables us to grow our share in paper sales worldwide and broaden our presence through offices in many countries. We believe ‘tradition and modernity go hand in hand’ which means we value long term relationships as part of our Eastern traditions, while we also are eager to embrace the modern values of innovation and efficiency.

Maintaining the integrity of our supply chain is also crucial to APP’s operations. APP launched its Sustainability Roadmap Vision 2020 in June 2012 and its Forest Conservation Policy in February 2013, to further improve its environmental performance, biodiversity conservation, and protection of community rights. Key objectives of this roadmap are to ensure that its pulpwood suppliers adopt High Conservation Value (HCV) and High Carbon Stock (HCS) protection, peatland protection, and be 100% Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) certified by 2020.

In April 2014, APP launched its commitment to support the protection and restoration of one million hectares of forest in Indonesia. In line with that commitment, by 2015 APP and its suppliers have allocated approximately 600,000 hectares for conservation within its suppliers’ concessions and for ecosystem restoration.
