Ho Chi Minh City, 11 May 2017 – Asia Pulp &Paper Group(APP) was awarded The Certificate of Vietnam Environment Administration (VEA)at the Eco-Products International Fair (EPIF) 2017for APP’s Integrated Forestry and Farming System (IFFS).
The award is the second-time APP has been recognized by EPIF for its environmental practices. Previously, EPIF acknowledged the implementation of APP’s Forest Conservation Policy (FCP).
“APP is honored to be awarded, yet again, by EPIF. It acknowledgesour commitment to continuously improve our environmental practices,” said APP Director Suhendra Wiriadinata. He added,“However there is still much work to be done with regard to our environmental footprint.This award highlights just one small part of the work we are doing across APP torealize our Sustainability Roadmap Vision 2020.”
IFFS is a community empowerment program designed to help prevent and mitigate forest fires. It also focuses on improving the livelihood of local communities and sees APP assisting communities to increase their awareness and use of modern agroforestry practices for example.
By improving village prosperity and supporting more environmentally friendly ways of farming, APP aims to minimize land clearing using fire by engaging these communities in preventing and mitigating forest fires.
Mr. Wiriadinata explains, “So far,seventy-six villages have participated. Our aim is to have two hundred villages actively involved by the end of 2017. APP not only provide initial financial support to the villages but also promotes the transfer of technology and competence. It alsoassists in mediating when there is conflict. IFFS isaimed at villages around APP’s concessions to further improve effortsto preserve the surrounding environment.”
The program is part of the larger fire prevention and response plan of APP: the Integrated Fire Management (IFM) Strategy. This plan includes an early detection system, centered ina special situation room. This venue integrates and communicates all information from APP’s fire towers, thermal imaging cameras, and ground patrols. APP’s Response teams are equipped with water pumps, water trucks, and several helicopters with water bombing capacity.
EPIF 2017 was held from May 11th 2017 until May 13th 2017. This three-day event promoted the theme “Green Technologies and Products – Action for the Future.” This focus is helping raise awareness of productivity and sustainable development by producing and consuming eco-friendly products, services, and technology.
EPIF has been promoted by Asian Productivity Organization (APO) since 2004 and is organized in APO’s member countries annually. (***)
